提醒五：注意碳水化合物、脂肪的含量
能量棒再厲害，也不可能全部都由蛋白質構成，否則可能沒有多少人吃得下去。挑選能量棒時，除了最重要的蛋白質，其他成分當然也不可以忽略。
碳水化合物是第一個不可少的，但在及格的能量棒中，碳水化合物的成分應該要比蛋白質還少。最理想的碳水化合物和蛋白質比應該為1:2。有些廠商會添加如菊澱粉（inulin）或低聚半乳糖（galactooligosaccharides）等纖維素。這些纖維素可以幫助消化，是不計算在碳水化合物成分內的。
那麼脂肪呢？脂肪在能量棒中，扮演增加熱量的角色。如果你選擇代餐功能的能量棒，那麼適量的脂肪含量是不可少的。美國實驗證實，中鏈三酸甘酯（medium chain triglycerides）、椰油、椰奶油等油脂，比起橄欖油更能幫助體重管理，也是比較適合攝取的脂肪來源。要注意的是，如果你打算在運動後吃能量棒，那麼脂肪含量應該越少越好，以免身體吸收大量脂肪。
提醒六：注意是否有糖醇
有些廠商為了避免增加能量棒中的碳水化合物含量，又想為產品增加甜分，便轉而添加糖醇（sugar alcohols）。這個成分雖然不會讓你胖，但有些人會對糖醇比較敏感，吃進肚子裡可能會造成腹瀉、痙攣、脹氣等副作用。如果你曾經有以上症狀出現，在挑選能量棒的時候就要小心。
提醒七：成份越簡單越好
